SAN DIEGO - A group of military wives called the Murphy Canyon Mamas is boxing up supplies for the victims in Oklahoma. They came up with the idea on Tuesday, got the idea out on social media and the supplies started rolling in.

“Clothes, shoes, toiletries, car seats, things that we think that they would need, water, canned food,” said Lisa Escalona, one of the women organizing the effort.

By Tuesday evening they had more supplies than they knew what to do with and one big problem. “Getting it from San Diego to Oklahoma,” said Escalona.

They decided to reach out to San Diegans on San Diego 6 News and viewers called in to help. One couple rented a truck and offered to drive the supplies the 1200 miles to where they are needed. Escalona says when she heard the news she was overjoyed. “That was the best phone call ever,” she said, “you could just hear a sigh of relief.”

The truck heads out Thursday and should be in Oklahoma by Friday or Saturday. Escalona says she wants those in Oklahoma to know they are loved.

“We love them, are thinking about them, our hearts are with them 100-percent and anything we can do to make it easier, that’s what we want and its definitely coming from our hearts.

MOORE, OK - EF-5 tornadoes are characterized by sustained winds in excess of 200 miles per hour and homes completely torn off their foundations. National Weather Service Meterologist Alex Tardy says both wind speeds and degree of damage to structures, trees and cars are all factors that play into how a tornado is classified.

The tornado has claimed 24 lives according the Medical Examiner and cut a seventeen mile path of destruction, but it is not the first EF-5 tornado to level Moore.

In 1999, another EF-5 storm killed 36 people in Moore left a path of destruction nearly 41 miles wide. In 2003, another violent tornado hit very near Moore.

Melanie Shelton lost her home in the 1999 storm and tragedy struck twice when it happened again on Monday.

“It happened before and you think it will never happen again and it did happen again,” Shelton said.

Tardy says the area has had more than its share of tornadoes.

“In terms of these catastrophic events just in 15 years, that’s pretty rare of a community to be almost completely wiped off the map three times in some part of their community,” he said. As to why it’s happening, he says scientists just don’t know. He says it could be due to changing weather patterns being seen all over the globe. “We have seen an increase in all severe weather activity: tornadoes, flooding, drought, heat in the past 20 years.”
